Moxifloxacin
- A novel fourth-generation fluoroquinolone
- Acts by interfering with the bacterial DNA replication process
- Known to be highly effective against both gram-positive and negative organisms
Tobramycin
- A bactericidal drug that acts by primarily inhibiting protein synthesis
- Useful in controlling both superficial and deep infections of the eye and ocular adnexa
- In a study about antibiotic resistance in bacteria causing eye infections, it was found S. aureus’s resistance to tobramycin had decreased little but significantly.
Combination
- Both Tobramycin and Moxifloxacin in eye drops are equally effective as empirical therapy when used in acute bacterial conjunctivitis
- High rates of clinical cure were achieved with both agents with negligible side effects.
